Zurich Film Festival Names Galas Ahead of 10th Edition
Tragicomedies, family dramas, documentaries and Cannes favorites are in the lineup heading to Switzerland next month
Films from David Gordon Green, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Frederick Wiseman are among the gala screenings announced Thursday for next month's Zurich Film Festival.
The 10th edition of the festival, set to take place in Switzerland's largest city from Sept. 25 to Oct. 5, will see the local premieres of Green's Al Pacino-starring ex-con drama Manglehorn; Inarritu's superhero-inspired tragicomedy Birdman, with Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone; and Wiseman's documentary National Gallery, which was warmly received in Cannes.
Other gala screenings include the comedy My Old Lady, playwright and screenwriter Israel Horovitz's directorial debut starring Maggie Smith. From German director Fatih Akin comes Turkish historical odyssey The Cut, and emerging Italian filmmaker and Cannes winner Alice Rohrwacher brings family drama The Wonders (La Meraviglie).
Concluding the list at Zurich is Sundance and Cannes-favorite Whiplash, Damien Chazelle's taut drama about a passionate drum student and his brutal teacher.
