'Argo,' 'Silver Linings Playbook' Win Big at Critics' Choice Movie Awards
The Broadcast Film Critics Association's 18th annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards saw Argo win best picture and Ben Affleck earn directing honors the same day the Academy failed to grant him an Oscar nomination for helming the film.
"I would like to thank the Academy," Affleck said during Thursday's ceremony. "Just kidding, this is the one that counts!"
Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) held back tears as she accepted the award for best actress, and in her speech she acknowledged Kathryn Bigelow, who did not receive an Oscar nomination for directing the film. Soon after, Daniel Day-Lewis received a huge standing ovation as he was presented with the best actor award for Lincoln by Melissa Leo.
Silver Linings Playbook also won big at the ceremony. Star Jennifer Lawrence took home awards for best actress in an action movie for The Hunger Games and best actress in a comedy for Silver Linings Playbook. She and her Silver Linings costars were honored with best acting ensemble, and Bradley Cooper took home best actor in a comedy for the film from director David O. Russell.
"You're looking at a very lucky man," Cooper told the crowd.
Shortly afterwards, the film was awarded best comedy, with director Russell saying, "My son taught me about myself...I made it to give him hope."
After becoming the youngest best actress nominee in Oscar history earlier in the day, Beasts of the Southern Wild star Quvenzhane Wallis received the award for best young actor/actress and read a charming speech from her iPhone.
Meanwhile, Daniel Craig's latest James Bond feature, Skyfall, netted him a best actor in an action movie honor, while the film beat out The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers for best action movie.
Octavia Spencer presented best supporting actor to Philip Seymour Hoffman (in absentia) for The Master, while Anne Hathaway received a partial standing ovation when her Les Miserables costar Eddie Redmayne presented her with best supporting actress.
The ceremony took place at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica and aired live on the CW. The show was produced by Bob Bain Productions and Berlin Entertainment.
