'Coriolanus': New Stills of Ralph Fiennes, Gerard Butler, Vanessa Redgrave (Exclusive Photos)
Three new stills from Ralph Fiennes’ buzzed-about directorial debut feature key characters from the story set behind the words of William Shakespeare himself.
Based on Shakespeare’s play, Coriolanus follows Caius Martius (Fiennes), a powerful Roman general at odds with his city, as he seeks the esteemed position of Consul. Lacking the votes and public approval needed for the title, the anger of “Coriolanus” causes a riot and he is expelled from Rome. He is then forced to turn to his sworn enemy, Tullus Aufidius (Gerard Butler), in an attempt to take revenge on the city.
“For your voices I have fought,” reads one still, which prominently features Fiennes’ ice-cold gaze. In another, Vanessa Redgrave and Jessica Chastain are seen kneeling with their hands clutched together. “Fall down and knee the way into his mercy,” the text reads.
In a final still, Butler crouches low while wielding a knife. “He is a lion that I am proud to hunt,” he boasts.
Coriolanus premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February, and made its North American debut at the Toronto Film Festival in September. The Weinstein Co. will embark on an awards qualifying run later this month, with a theatrical debut set for Jan. 20.
Fiennes spoke with The Race’s Scott Feinberg earlier this year, where he discussed his bold, present day reimagining of the 17th century play in detail. To watch the full interview, click here.
