The Motion Picture Sounds Editors have chosen supervising sound editor George Watters II as its 2012 MPSE Career Achievement Recipient. He will receive the honor at the 59th annual Golden Reel Awards to be held Feb. 19 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles.

Watters, who has received eight Oscar nominations, won Academy Awards for his work on 1990's The Hunt for Red October and 2001's Pearl Harbor. He's also earned four MPSE awards and three BAFTA nominations.

"The significance of sound should not be underestimated," MPSE president Bobbi Banks said. "The emotional intimacy of the sound experience is enhanced by giving the audience the perception that they are encountering the same state of cognitive consciousness as the characters."

Nominees for this year's Golden Reel Awards will be announced Jan. 20.
