Hollywood Music in Media Awards: Sam Smith, Lady Gaga, Brian Wilson Among Nominees (Exclusive)

The annual celebration of music in film, TV, video games, commercials and trailers is one of the better predictors of the best original score and best original song Golden Globe and Oscar categories.

Songs by Sam Smith, Jennifer Lopez, Brian Wilson, Lady Gaga and Diane Warren and scores by Carter Burwell, Danny Elfman and the still-Oscarless Thomas Newman are among the nominees for the sixth annual Hollywood Music in Media Awards, the only awards show specifically devoted to the celebration of music in visual media (film, TV, video games, commercials and trailers), The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively. Winners will be revealed during a ceremony at The Fonda Theatre in Hollywood on Nov. 11.

The five nominees for song (feature film) are "I'll See You in My Dreams," written and preformed by Keegan DeWitt for the film of the same name; "One Kind of Love," Wilson's original song for the film about his life, Love & Mercy; "See You Again," Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth's chart-topping number from Furious 7 that was written by Andrew Cedar, Justin Franks, Cameron Thomaz and Puth; "Take Care of You," No Escape's tune by Jim James; and "Writing on the Wall," which Smith wrote with Newman and performs in the upcoming Bond film, Spectre.

The six nominees for original score (feature film) are Beasts of No Nation (Dan Romer), Bridge of Spies (Newman), Carol (Burwell), Sicario (Johann Johannsson), Steve Jobs (Daniel Pemberton) and The Walk (Alan Silvestri).

HMMA nominees are determined by an advisory board and selection committee that includes journalists, music executives, songwriters and composers. Winners are chosen by select members of the Society of Composers & Lyricists, the TV Academy, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' music branch, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and performing-rights organizations, as well as film-music journalists and music executives.

If last year's HMMA voting is any indication, then the HMMAs are as strong a predictor of best original song and best original score Golden Globe and Oscar noms as any of the awards that precede those — all five HMMA score nominees last year also were nominated for the corresponding Golden Globe, and the HMMAs was the only notable precursor award to even nominate the song "Lost Stars" (it actually gave it the best original song prize) en route to its Oscar nom.
