KTLA anchors Mary Beth McDade and Rick Chambers spoke to Kapsch about whom the likely winners at the 84th Academy Awards would be for best director, supporting actor and actress, best actor and actress and best picture.

For best director, Michel Hazanavicius of The Artist is a strong frontrunner, said Kapsch. The French director recently won the top honor at the Directors Guild Awards.

In the supporting actress category, Octavia Spencer was choice for top contender, after having already won awards at the SAG Awards, Golden Globe Awards and Critics’ Choice Awards.

“However,” said Kapsch, “there is a lot of support for Melissa McCarthy of Bridesmaids and if the below the line Academy voters support the actress it could change the result,” Kapsch added that Spencer is competing in her category against her co-star from The Help, Jessica Chastain, which could potentially split the vote.

Kapsch bet on Christopher Plummer from Beginners as a lock for best supporting actor. The 82-year-old actor has already won every award he’s been nominated for this season. The only upset in this category could possibly be Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close star Max von Sydow. If either wins, they will become the oldest Oscar winner in history.

For best actress, Viola Davis of The Help is favored to win, but The Iron Lady’s Meryl Streep should not be counted out of the race just yet.

“What’s working against [Meryl Streep] is that people think, ‘Well, Meryl has always won it, Viola hasn’t won it,’” said Kapsch, who pointed out that Streep actually hasn’t won an Oscar since 1982 for Sophie’s Choice.

Kapsch named The Artist’s Jean Dujardin, who has been called the "George Clooney of France," as the favorite for best actor, even though Clooney himself is also in the category for The Descendants.

When it comes to best picture, The Artist again looks like it will take the prize, but Kapsch added that The Help is also a real contender. “I think that The Artist has every indicator that it will pull this off, but there has been a sort of 11th-hour groundswell of support for The Help. It's a well-liked movie so we'll see” Kapsch said.
