Oscars Voter's Guide: 151 Long-Listed Docs by Subject Matter

As always, a considerable number of documentaries about arts/literature, music, sociology/politics and sports are vying to make the shortlist of 15.

"Stories We Tell" (Roadside Attractions)

The 217 members of the Academy's documentary branch must submit their ballots to determine the best documentary feature Oscar shortlist -- from a longlist of 151 films, all of which were sent to them in giant boxes over the last few months -- to PricewaterhouseCoopers by 5 p.m. PT Friday. The resulting shortlist of 15 films will then be announced publicly on or around Dec. 3.

Thursday, I profiled the 15 docs that I suspect are most likely to make the cut. But to help both branch members and readers review their options and sort their thoughts about the full list, I have put together a breakdown of those titles by subject matter.

STORY: '12 Years a Slave,' 'Captain Phillips' and the Race to Fact-Check Oscar Hopefuls

You'll notice, after the jump, that there are, as always, a considerable number of docs about arts/literature, music, sociology/politics and sports in contention. But there are also other "subgenres" represented, including adventure, economics, education/youth, family/personal stories, food, health/health care, journalism, law/crime, LGBT issues, nature/animals, religion/philosophy, science/technology, show business, war and women's issues.

In the comments section at the bottom of the post, perhaps you can share the 15 docs that you would vote to shortlist from this impressive -- and overwhelming -- group.
