The 63-year-old silver-haired actor stands a good shot at scoring the first Oscar nomination of his nearly 40-year career for his perf in Nicholas Jarecki's film.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Richard Gere, the popular and respected veteran film actor who is now a serious best actor Oscar contender for his performance in Nicholas Jarecki's dramatic-thriller Arbitrage, will receive the Hollywood Career Achievement Award at the 16th annual Hollywood Film Awards -- the first awards show of the 2012 Oscar season -- when its gala ceremony is held Oct. 22 at the Beverly Hilton.

The Hollywood Film Awards, which are associated with the Hollywood Film Festival and determined by HFF founder and executive director Carlos de Abreu and his advisory team, recognize individuals for both career achievement and work released within the calendar year. De Abreu tells THR, "It is a privilege to honor and to celebrate Richard Gere's extraordinary talent and remarkable career."

Previous recipients of the Hollywood Career Achievement Award include Kirk Douglas (1997), Shelley Winters (1998), Jack Lemmon (1999), Richard Dreyfuss (2000), John Travolta (2004), Diane Keaton (2005), Robin Williams (2006), Dustin Hoffman (2008), Sylvester Stallone (2010) and Glenn Close (2011).

Considering how many modern-day classics Gere has been a part of -- among them Richard Brooks's Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977), Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven (1978), Taylor Hackford's An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), Garry Marshall's Pretty Woman (1990), Gregory Hoblit's Primal Fear (1996), Adrian Lyne's Unfaithful (2002), Rob Marshall's best picture Oscar winner Chicago (2002), and Lasse Hallström's The Hoax (2006) -- it is somewhat surprising that he has never even been nominated for an Oscar. That might well change this year thanks to his work in Arbitrage, for which he has earned some of the best reviews of his career.
