ABC Drops "Fattest" From "Fattest Housewife" Pilot Title

In an effort to dodge outcry from potentially offended viewers, the network shortened 'The Second Fattest Housewife' to a much blander 'American Housewife.'

In 2012, ABC comedy Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23 became Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 in its transition to air. Two years earlier, CBS’ Shit My Dad Says had been obscured by punctuation marks. And now, ABC’s Katy Mixon comedy — memorably titled The Second Fattest Housewife in Westport during pilot season — is set to premiere with the considerably blander American Housewife.

The shift drew eyerolls from the press, with ABC’s new entertainment chief Channing Dungey dodging a question about concerns that the former title would offend. ABC Studios chief Patrick Moran is more forthcoming, telling THR: “In the development process, [the comedy] moved away from being all about … body issues and toward this idea of how do you raise a family in a moneyed environment.” He notes the “super-catchy title” was more fitting for an “old version of the script.”
