Diane Sawyer, Ann Curry Laud Tina Fey at 'Whiskey Tango Foxtrot' NYC Screening
For Ann Curry, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is familiar territory.
The dark comedy stars Tina Fey as journalist Kim Barker, a dissatisfied American news copy producer who heads to wartime Afghanistan as a foreign correspondent and becomes addicted to chasing more ambitious — and dangerous — subject matter.
"Certainly, watching the movie did hit a nerve for me," Curry told The Hollywood Reporter while co-hosting an intimate Sunday night screening of the Paramount Pictures title at New York City's Museum of Modern Art. "And I'm not alone — I just talked to another woman who spent some time in Afghanistan and for both of us, it reminded us of that addiction to wanting to be part of the action, wanting to make sure the story is told, and wanting to make sure we got the voice of people who were suffering expressed to the world."
Specifically, the line "As much as we love the troops, people don’t want to watch them on TV anymore," is too relevant, Curry continued. "It's actually what happened for Iraq and Afghanistan, and though it's not the same kind of war, I hope it doesn't also happen for the humanitarian disaster in Syria."
Diane Sawyer identified with Fey's "wonderful combination of heart and head, and the thing that can happen when you become passionate about a subject," she told THR. "I thought she was astonishing."
The starry screening — co-hosted by Curry and Sawyer, as well as Barbara Walters, Soledad O'Brien, Joan Lunden, Norah O'Donnell and Lesley Stahl — was introduced by Lorne Michaels. The producer shared Fey's initial pitch from four years ago: "[She said,] 'Why is it that everyone else gets to do a war movie and I don't get to do a war movie?' … I said, 'Perfect, because I know right now, Paramount is desperate for big-budget Taliban comedy.'"
Directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa were admittedly "terrified" to screen the film for the room's journalists, but celebrated afterward at The Modern with Fey, co-star Christopher Abbott and guests Tom Hanks, Steve Martin, Colin Quinn, Gayle King, Steve Higgins and Andy Cohen, among others.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot features a screenplay by Robert Carlock and also stars Margot Robbie, Martin Freeman, Alfred Molina and Billy Bob Thornton. Paramount will release the film on March 4.
