Sundance Competition Winner 'Middle of Nowhere' Releases New Trailer (Video)
The romantic drama shows the trials and tribulations of a medical student whose husband is sentenced to eight years in prison.
After a successful run of the festival circuit, with writer-director Ava DuVernay becoming the first black woman to be awarded the best director prize at the Sundance Film Festival, the romantic drama Middle of Nowhere is now prepped for a nationwide release.
“I wanted to explore a love story where the balance had shifted,” DuVernay told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year. “You know, when you’re in a relationship and you look up and wonder, How did I get here? How am I now this person I don't recognize?”
The relationship in Middle of Nowhere is defined by forced separation, and how Ruby (Emayatzy Corinealdi) adapts when her husband Derek (Omari Hardwick) is sentenced to eight years in prison. Dropping out of medical school to manage her strained marriage is merely the beginning of a new life and new identity molded by hardship.
DuVernay, Howard Barish and Paul Garnes produced the drama, which had its world premiere Friday, Jan. 20, at the Sundance Film Festival. The film was picked up by Participant Media/AaFFRM and will open nationwide on Oct. 12, 2012.
After seeing the film, THR critic John DeFore wrote: “A deceptively slight film that strikes the right balance between realist family drama and earnestness, Middle of Nowhere observes a marriage put on hold and suggests its star might be wise to move on.”
