SXSW 2013 Announces Midnight Features and Shorts Lineup
Rob Zombie's "The Lords of Salem" is among the nine films chosen for the late-night, genre-focused lineup.
The South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival announced the lineup for the Midnighters section, as well as the complete short films lineup on Wednesday.
Nine films were announced for the genre-heavy, late-night Midnighters section, including world premieres of Mike Mendez’s film Big Ass Spider! starring Greg Grunberg; Vincenzo Natali’s Haunter starring Abigail Breslin; Dennis Iliadis’ Plus One; and E.L. Katz’s Cheap Thrills. Also, Rob Zombie’s The Lords of Salem, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September and stars his wife Sheri Moon Zombie, will also have its U.S. premiere in the popular after-dark genre section.
“We work year-round searching for films that will wow our audiences at Midnight. This year we scoured the globe and brought back a batch that we knew would truly satisfy the gore hounds of SXSW,” said SXSW senior programmer & operations manager Jarod Neece. “Full of scares, sex, madness, laughs, chills and major mindf---s, we hope there's a little something for everyone.”
Additionally, 106 short films were selected from 3,597 submissions. That’s an 8 percent increase over 2012.
Previously announced SXSW 2013 titles include Much Ado About Nothing, Go for Sisters and Yellow. New Line's Steve Carell-Jim Carrey magician comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone has already been announced as the fest's opening film.
