WHY HE MATTERS
Hastings sticks to a signature color scheme — he nearly always dresses Carey Mulligan and Rooney Mara in black or white. Yet the monochrome palette is never boring and feels fresh, modern and sophisticated, with innovative cuts.

HIS TOP LOOK
The press-shy New Yorker started working with Mulligan in March 2013, just in time for her Great Gatsby and Inside Llewyn Davis red-carpet tours de force: a black Balenciaga by Alexander Wang jumpsuit, a barely blush duchess-satin Dior Couture gown, a black-and-white Vionnet gown (No. 35) and a Chloe LBD during the Cannes Film Festival. The surprise showstopper was a canary-yellow Dior Couture dress at the Llewyn Davis premiere in London after months of black dresses and jumpsuits. Mara’s white Balenciaga with illusion cape and silk organza panels was fashionably fierce at the Her premiere in Rome (No. 36) — she still does cool, gothic-glam better than anyone else. It’s also hard to forget her custom white sculptural Lanvin gown at the Oxfam Charity Gala in Dubai.
