Discovery Sued Over Reality TV Helicopter Crash

The father of late cameraman Darren Rydstrom is the latest to file legal action related to the February 2013 accident.

The father of a man killed in a helicopter crash during the filming of a reality TV show has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Discovery Communications.

The father of Darren Rydstrom, a cameraman killed in a Feb. 10, 2013, crash, filed his suit Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court. The lawsuit also names multiple companies connected to the operation of the helicopter, including Crossbow Helicopters.

Donald H. Rydstrom's lawsuit claims Discovery and the other defendants were "negligent in the hiring, retention, training, and supervision of their agents, employees" and independent contractors. Rydstrom is suing for general damages at a trial by jury.

Discovery declined to comment.

Darren Rydstrom was killed when a Bell helicopter crashed into a canyon north of Los Angeles. The crash occurred during a night shoot for a military-themed Discovery Channel reality TV series. The helicopter's pilot, David Gibbs, and castmember Michael Donatelli were also were killed.

The crash has prompted multiple lawsuits, including one filed in May 2013 by Darren Rydstrom's mother, Jerie S. Rydstrom.
