Machinima Names General Counsel
The company's new CEO is building up his team
Machinima's new CEO Chad Gutstein is continuing to build up the YouTube network's leadership ranks, this time with the appointment of Chris Riley as general counsel.
Riley joins the gaming-centric company from Bingham McCutcheon, where he was a partner in the corporate practice group. He previously served as general counsel for Ticketmaster and Match.com, and also was a legal consultant for Disney Interactive.
Riley is Gutstein's second appointment in the last month — human resources veteran Tricia White joined the West Hollywood-based firm in July — and the company is expected to make additional hires.
Formerly COO of arts cable network Ovation, Gutstein took the helm of Machinima at the end of March and has been focused on reinventing the struggling network, which had seen a decline in its audience and had undergone rounds of layoffs. At the time of his appointment, the company had vacancies in several leadership positions, including those Gutstein recently filled.
Machinima, which operates a YouTube multichannel network that has more than 2.7 billion monthly video views, also lost a handful of top brass, including vp strategy and business development Sanjay Sharma, who joined Russell Simmons' All Def Digital, and vp sales and advertising Jeff Mayo, who left for Latino YouTube network MiTu.
"Machinima's continued success depends on our ability to attract and retain the best people," Gutstein said. "That's why I'm so excited to welcome Chris to our leadership team. His deep legal expertise and advisory skills and multiple stints as general counsel for leading digital and traditional businesses, bring insights and proven executional excellence to Machinima."
