School is in session for Lashana Lynch.
The No Time to Die star is in final negotiations to join the cast of the feature adaptation of the musical Matilda for Netflix.
The musical is based on the Roald Dahl classic about a precocious and gifted 5-year-old, who uses her powers of telekinesis to overcome bullies, including her family and her school's principal, and protect her friends. Lynch will play Miss Honey, the kindly teacher that encourages Matilda and her gifts. (Embeth Davidtz played the role in the 1996 feature film adaptation of the Dahl book.)
Matthew Warchus, who was the director of the stage musical, is set to direct. Original playwright Dennis Kelly will adapt the screenplay, with original music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.
Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will produce for Working Title, which recently worked with the streamer on the Armie Hammer-starring Rebecca. Luke Kelly will produce for The Roald Dahl Story Company.
Netflix is handling worldwide distribution, with Sony's TriStar Pictures, which made the 1996 film version, handling an exclusive theatrical release in the U.K. (Netflix will have the movie on its service in U.K. following the theatrical run.)
Matilda the Musical was a critical and commercial success, having played both on the West End and Broadway, along with receiving a U.S. and U.K. tour. It earned seven 2012 Olivier Awards and five Tony Awards in 2013.
Lynch broke-out playing Maria Rambeau opposite Brie Larson in Marvel superhero standalone Captain Marvel. She then went on to land a major role in the new James Bond film No Time to Die, which is due out in April after being postponed several times due to the pandemic.
She is repped by ICM, the U.K.'s BWH Agency, Alan Siegel and Sloane Offer.
