September's spate of hurricanes has been devastating in so many ways, but while much of the Caribbean (not to mention Texas, Florida and more) have a massive recovery effort ahead of them, some islands made it through nearly unscathed. One of the lucky ones is the Bahamas hot spot The Cove at Atlantis, the luxury hotel with those iconic red lounging beds at adults-only pool hangout Cain, recently visited by Katie Holmes, Serena Williams, Mariah Carey and John Legend. They're even more fortunate because in November the property debuts a major design revamp by Lulu de Kwiatkowski, textile designer and artist.
Her connection to the island is storied. The designer has been visiting the Bahamas since she was a child and is currently renovating a home for herself on the island — she's a New Yorker, but also owns a self-designed and -decorated home in L.A. "My dear friend Greg Calejo called me and said, 'I have an amazing project for you in your hometown of the Bahamas — the iconic Cove.' The rest was history," she says of her homecoming with this project.
The newsy update features exclusive Lulu DK designs in the decor and amenities, as well as the pool and beach cabanas, lounge chairs, uniforms and even surfboards. "I designed hand-painted surfboards for each cabana, which set the tone for each to be original," says de Kwiatkowski. "Seeing them all lined up on the beach was pure joy." (Her Lulu DK line will also be sold exclusively at The Cove.)
The designer didn't have to look far to be inspired and discover her palette of blues and white. "When you are working on a beach hotel nestled next to one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, inspiration is everywhere and endless," she says, adding that her ideas came from nature and "all her amazing tropical colors." The printed fabric around the deep blue pool is a favorite element of de Kwiatkowski's, who loved incorporating the shades of the surrounding ocean and sky into the atmosphere.
Her vibrant newness will kick off with a star-studded weekend party, Nov. 3-5, that will see celeb chef Jose Andres — himself opening Fish at The Cove in early 2018 — cooking dinner and a private concert by a surprise musical guest as well as an after-party on a yacht. And there's yet another reason to visit this winter: Chef Julie Lightborn of Sip Sip — whose Harbor Island outpost sees the likes of Diane von Furstenberg, Robert De Niro, Elle McPherson and Jimmy Fallon — debuts at The Cove simultaneously.
