Just hours after news broke that Andre Balazs now stands accused of groping actress Amanda Anka and others, the party went on at the hotelier’s L.A. hotspot Chateau Marmont, where on any given night of the week there’s always a Hollywood or fashion industry event.
On Thursday night, Sofia Coppola, Kirsten Dunst and others gathered in Bungalow 1 to toast Julie de Libran, the designer who has been reimagining the chic French fashion house Sonia Rykiel with a casual, Paris-to-L.A. aesthetic with rainbow stripes, high-waist denim and Chateau-ready party dresses since assuming the role of artistic director in 2014. (Dubbed the Queen of Knits, the fire-haired Rykiel rose to prominence in fashion in the 1970s with her signature stripes, and died in 2016.)
Libran grew up in Los Angeles, from 1980 to 1990, so “it’s in my heart,” she said in between greeting guests for the dinner party. (You only have to look to the palm tree-shaped brooches in her fall 2017 Sonia Rykiel collection and the shell embellishments on the spring 2018 runway, for evidence of that.)
Several attendees, including Annabelle Wallis, Langley Fox and Brooklyn Sudano, were wearing straight-off-the-runway styles from the forthcoming spring collection.
“I wanted it to feel summery but still suitable for the office,” Libran explained of her hot-weather vision, adding that rather than bare styles, she wanted “to have suits that work for the heat that you can take off the sleeves and be in a vest.”
There was also lots of pearl embellishment — on dresses, sandals and handbags. “It’s something raw but precious, too,” she explained. (Each dinner guest was gifted a mini SR Le Copain handbag dotted with pearls.)
'Tis the season of wining and dining stylists in the run-up to awards show red carpets, and there were several in attendance Thursday night, including Elizabeth Stewart, who put Gal Gadot in a slick patent leather Sonia Rykiel coat earlier this week for a photocall in London. Of Libran, she said, “I like what she’s doing.”
