There's news on the Stamps front: ReFrame and IMDBPro revealed today that 29 of the 100 most popular scripted films of 2020 have received a ReFrame Stamp, a mark of distinction for projects that have demonstrated gender-balanced hiring. The showing is a jump of 12 percent over 2019 when 26 films were selected.

ReFrame — founded by Sundance Institute and Women in Film — analyzes data from partner IMDbPro to identify recipients among the 100 most popular movies in the U.S. It also evaluates projects outside of that grouping that submit themselves for consideration. The Stamp criteria were developed in consultation with ReFrame Ambassadors, producers, and other industry experts, and is awarded annually to both films and TV content since 2018.

Earning the distinction this year are titles including The Old Guard, Wonder Woman 1984, Promising Young Woman, Hillbilly Elegy, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, On the Rocks, Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn Smith, Mulan, Happiest Season, Emma and Horse Girl. Other stats to note: This year's Stamp recipients are comprised of 17 films directed by women (an increase over 12 films in 2019); six films directed by women of color (an increase of four films); four films written by women of color (an increase of one); and seven films with women cinematographers (up from two films in 2019).

ReFrame gave special shine to Gina Prince-Bythewood's The Old Guard, the Netflix action flick starring Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne, as the most popular film to meet ReFrame Stamp criteria. Prince-Bythewood, a ReFrame ambassador, said she's incredibly proud to receive the mark. “Our success is a beautiful and powerful counter to those who deny women the opportunity to play in the big sandbox. The women who worked on this film are incredible talents and they deserve their shine.”

In addition to the 29 films, more than 40 films outside the IMDBPro 100 list earned the Stamp. Those titles include The High Note, I Carry You With Me, I’m Your Woman, Shirley, and Wander Darkly. A full list can be found here.
