The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, presents its annual awards on Jan. 31 at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Here’s some things to know about the nominations, some of which might leave readers wondering if this group quietly signaled that The Lego Movie wasn’t the Oscar nomination lock that many believed it to be.

The most nominated films: The Boxtrolls, with 13 nominations, and How To Train Your Dragon 2, with 10 nods.

The Lego Movie, in comparison, received six nominations, and was passed over in categories including character design and character animation. While the Annies generally isn't viewed as an Oscar predictor, was this--combined with a similar trend in the Visual Effects Society's animation nominations--an early sign of the eventual Oscar announcement? Some thought so.

Among the Oscar contenders, Disney’s Big Hero 6 and GKIDS and Cartoon Saloon’s Song of the Sea earned seven Annie nods each, and GKIDS and Studio Ghibli’s The Tale of The Princess Kaguya earned three.

There are eight Annie nominees for best animated feature.

They are Big Hero 6, The Boxtrolls, The Lego Movie,The Book of Life from Fox and Reel FX, Cheatin' from Plymptoons Studios, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Song of the Sea and The Tale of The Princess Kaguya.

The category for best feature direction mirrors the best feature category.

GutierrezCheatin' by Bill PlymptonSong of the Sea by Tomm Moore, and The Tale of The Princess Kaguya by Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata.
