'Blade Runner 2049,' 'Coco' Top Advanced Imaging Society's Lumiere Awards

Warner Bros.’s Blade Runner 2049 and Disney/Pixar's Coco took top honors at the Advanced Imaging Society's Lumiere Awards, which were handed out Monday evening at the Steven J. Ross Theater on the Warner Bros. lot.

Blade Runner 2049 was honored as the year's best live action 3D motion picture, as well as for best live action stereography and 2D-to-3D conversion. Coco was recognized as the year's best 3D animated motion picture and for best stereography in an animated film. Also in the 3D categories, the "Be Our Guest" sequence from Disney's Beauty and the Beast was named best 3D scene of the year.

In addition to 3D, the event honored virtual and augmented reality projects, as well as creative use of high dynamic range imagery. Among the honorees were Netflix and MacInnes Scott, whose Altered Carbon streaming series was named best augmented reality experience.

Coco producer Darla K. Anderson was presented with the honorary Harold Lloyd Award during the ceremony. "Coco challenged us to do more than I ever thought possible," she said. "The tools are evolving, but the goal remains the same -- to tell entertaining stories with an emotional connection."

Sony was chosen for the Sir Charles Wheatstone Award for contributions to cutting-edge technology, including its HD cameras, HDR monitors, 4K theater projectors and flat screen TVs, and for shipping more than 2 million PlayStation VR headsets.

In addition to the Wheatstone Award, Sony Pictures won the best branded VR experience, motion picture, award for Spider-Man: Homecoming VR. Accepting the award, a representative from Sony emphasized that the studio believes blockbuster brands can help build the VR market.

Demonstrating the educational potential of VR, a Special Jury Prize was presented to The Last Goodbye, the VR Holocaust Memorial, presented to the USC Shoah Foundation, MPC, Here Be Dragons and Otoy.
