'Birdman' Wins Top CAS Sound Mixing Award
Birdman won the trophy for outstanding sound mixing in a live action feature during the 51st annual Cinema Audio Society Awards, Saturday at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.
It topped a field of nominees from American Sniper, Guardians of the Galaxy, Interstellar and Unbroken.

Birdman, American Sniper, Interstellar and Unbroken, along with Whiplash — which last weekend won the BAFTA for sound — are nominated for the Oscar in sound mixing. In the past 12 years, six of the winners of the CAS live action feature category went on to win the Oscar.
In the animated feature category, CAS honored the sound mixers behind Big Hero 6.
Television winners included Game of Thrones, Modern Family and Sherlock.
Christopher Nolan presented Boyhood helmer Richard Linklater with the CAS Filmmaker Award. Calling Linklater "an American treasure" Nolan described Boyhood as his "masterpiece … that gently and persuasively holds up a mirror to the way we live. Richard has done that in the most subtle and wonderful way." Referencing Linklater's Dazed and Confused, Nolan also thanked him for discovering Matthew McConaughey, who most recently starred in Nolan's Interstellar.
Also participating in the presentation to Linklater were production sound mixer John Pritchett and Tricia Linklater, the director's sister, who is director of sound operations at Technicolor on the Paramount Lot.
Accepting, Linklater thanked the sound mixers — "the final word on the film" — and saluted the community, saying "everyone here's passionate, intelligent and very human."
Also during the ceremony, production sound mixer David Macmillan — who won Oscars for The Right Stuff, Speed and Apollo 13 — received the CAS Career Achievement Award. He related that he's been teaching and "I love it because I have an avenue to encourage people not just about sound but about film."
Kicking off the show, master of ceremonies Douglas McIntyre greeted attendees to the Valentines Day ceremony, getting laughs when he remarked "nothing says romance like talking shop."
Outgoing CAS president David E. Fluhr (who was also on the Big Hero 6 team) introduced his successor, Mark Ulano.
A student recognition award went to Danny Maurer of the University of Colorado Denver.
