FoxNext, a newly created immersive entertainment division working across the film and television businesses of 21st Century Fox, and virtual reality firm Within (in which 21st Century Fox is an investor) have formed a VR content partnership and unveiled the first two projects.

They will be working together with Annapurna Pictures on an original VR film with the working title I Remember You. Within founder and CEO Chris Milk will produce and direct the film, which was developed alongside director Spike Jonze (who directed and won an Oscar for the screenplay of Her). Annapurna Pictures founder Megan Ellison will co-produce the film with Jonze and Milk. When completed, it will be available through the Within app.

The first VR project in the partnership is based on 20th Century Fox's Planet of the Apes franchise, which will be directed and produced by Milk. According to the companies, it will use "artificial intelligence to deliver a shared social experience" and will also be available on the Within app. This project is independent of the previously announced Planet of the Apes-themed VR project from Fox and Imaginati Studios, which was revealed earlier this month at CES.

"In partnership with visionary filmmakers like Chris and companies like Within, Fox will continue to push the envelope to create immersive experiences," said FoxNext president Salil Mehta in a statement.

Milk added that the two announced projects "couldn't be any more different in how we're building them, or the end result. That's what's exciting about this new medium though — there is no one right answer."

Prior VR collaborations between Milk and Annapurna have included Life of Us, which is set to premiere at Sundance.
