How 'The Walking Dead' 'Robot Chicken' Special Came to Life

Every year at San Diego Comic-Con, Robot Chicken co-creator Matt Senreich and The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman have an "annual dinner." At this particular dinner  after discussing Robot Chicken's upcoming DC special  Kirkman expressed how his show felt left out of the Robot Chicken parody touch. Senreich said it "spiraled" from that.

According to the creators of Robot Chicken, The Walking Dead is the perfect jumping off point for parody. "The cool thing about [The Walking Dead] is that is takes the Walkers so seriously," explains Robot Chicken director Tom Sheppard. "Zombies in general have become kind of a joke trope and it went back to the origins."

The Robot Chicken Walking Dead special became a passion project for everyone involved. Co-creator Seth Green, Senreich, and Sheppard were all fans of The Walking Dead ever since its beginnings as a graphic novel.

When asked about the writing process, writer Breckin Meyer said, "You get out everything that everyone else will make fun of too. Get rid of all of the stuff that is low-hanging fruit and then get into it."
