Joshua Pines, Michelle Munson Among 16 New SMPTE Fellows

They will be recognized at the engineering society’s upcoming annual conference in Hollywood.

Joshua Pines, vp of imaging, research and development at Technicolor Production Services, and Michelle Munson, CEO and co-founder of Aspera, are among 16 who have been elevated to the status of Fellow of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.

They will be recognized at the upcoming SMPTE Technical Conference & Exhibition, set to run Oct. 24-27 at Hollywood & Highland, which also will celebrate the Society’s centennial year.

New fellows include Matthew Cowan, CTO at Entertainment Technology Canada; Walt Husak, director of image technologies at Dolby Laboratories; Thomas Bause Mason, director of advanced digital media technology for NBCUniversal; Fernando Bittencourt, CTO and general director of engineering at Brazil’s TV Globo; and Tim Borer, lead engineer at BBC Research and Development.

Rounding out the list of new fellows are Paul E. Briscoe, consultant at Televisionary Consulting; Ian Fletcher, CTO at Grass Valley; John Footen, global head of the broadcast consulting practice at Cognizant; John Mailhot, CTO of networking and infrastructure at Imagine Communications; Stan Moote, CTO at International Association of Broadcast Equipment Manufacturers; Stephan Scheel, senior director, media workflow, at PBS; Tom Sprague, CTO at National Boston; Masayuki Sugawara, executive engineer at NEC; and Peter G. Wharton, vp for technology and business development at BroadStream.
