WD Introduces Consumer 4K Ultra HD Movie Drive, Partners With Fox To Offer Titles
WD, a storage company owned by Western Digital, is introducing a consumer 4K Ultra HD movie drive aimed at making 4K Ultra HD more accessible in the home, while partnering with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment to deliver movies and TV series including X-Men: Days of Future Past and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in the format.
Dubbed My Passport Cinema, the drive allow users to organize, store and access movie and TV series in HD or in the 4K Ultra HD format (four times the resolution of HD) on Samsung SUHD TVs and other Vidity-enabled devices (4K playback is limited to select TV models). The drive has 1TB of storage capacity and lists for $89.99.
Consumers can connect a My Passport Cinema drive into a Vidity-compatible UHD TV or device and purchase preloaded Fox movies (movies are locked until purchase). They include The Maze Runner, Exodus: Gods and Kings, X-Men: Days of the Future Past, The Wolverine, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Fault in Our Stars, Let’s Be Cops and The Other Woman.
Once purchased on the My Passport Cinema drive, the movie can be accessed online or offline on Vidity-enabled devices such as 2015 JU and JS series 4K UHD and SUHD TVs. Users can download additional titles via PPV streaming service M-GO or other Vidity retailers.
Samsung SUHD TVs offer 4K with high dynamic range (HDR, meaning a wider range between the whitest whites and blackest blacks). To introduce the new format to consumers, from Aug. 16 - June 30, 2016, a My Passport Cinema drive will be included free with the purchase of Samsung JS9000, JS9100 or JS9500 SUHD TV models. Fox is bullish on 4K with HDR, and select preloaded movies support 4K and HDR.
“Our focus is on creating the highest-quality consumer experience possible,” said Danny Kaye, executive vp, global research and technology strategy, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. “This means the quality of the content as the demand for 4K Ultra HD content continues to increase and evolve, but also the ease of content acquisition and playback on next-generation TVs and other devices. WD's My Passport Cinema drive with Vidity technology brings together this unprecedented quality with the convenience of digital.”
