Netflix Sets Animated 'The Witch Boy' With Original Music by Haim
Netflix announced production on The Witch Boy, an animated musical feature based on the graphic novel series of the same title by Molly Knox Ostertag.
It will be directed by Minkyu Lee from a screenplay by Maria Melnik (Escape Room), and feature original music from three-time Grammy nominated band Haim. The Witch Boy will be produced by Roy Lee, Miri Yoon and Ryan Harris through Vertigo Entertainment and released by Netflix.
Set in a magical community where girls are born to be witches and boys grow into shapeshifters, The Witch Boy follows Aster, who discovers he has emerging witch powers. “It has been a life-long dream of mine to create an animated film that pushes the medium forward, both in content and form," said Lee in a released statement. "My hope is that this film, by celebrating queerness and 'otherness,' will come to audiences around the world as something truly special.”
Lee is the Oscar-nominated writer/director of 2012 animated short Adam and Dog. His credits include animation on Glen Keane's Academy Award-winning Dear Basketball and Disney's The Princess and the Frog, visual development on Frozen and Big Hero 6, and storyboarding on Netflix's Over the Moon helmed by Keane.
The Witch Boy joins Netflix’s original slate of animated features, which includes upcoming Back to the Outback directed by Clare Knight and Harry Cripps, Richard Linklater’s Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Adventure, Chris Williams’ The Sea Beast, Henry Selick’s Wendell & Wild, Nora Twomey’s My Father’s Dragon, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Wendy Rogers’ The Magician’s Elephant, and an Aardman sequel to Chicken Run.
