Oscars: Sound Mixers and Editors Gather for Dolby's Party

Members of Hollywood's close-knit sound community gathered Thursday night for Dolby Laboratories' party honoring this year's nominees in sound editing and sound mixing at its Burbank facility.

"The Dolby party is absolutely wonderful because it's a serious family reunion," said nominated rerecording mixer Beau Borders, who was on hand, along with fellow Lone Survivior nominee David Brownlow. "When you work for months and months in a dark room with people, they really do become your family members. This is the time of year when everyone congratulates each other on all the work that everyone did -- not just the movie you were on, but all of the nominees and films that didn't get nominated. Everyone works really hard and it's nice to see everyone together."

It was unsurprising that the Dolby Screening Room was packed with guests, who enjoy watching -- and listening to -- clips from the sound editing and mixing nominees, including Captain Phillips, Gravity, Lone Survivor, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Inside Llewyn Davis and All Is Lost. Gravity and The Hobbit, both of which were mixed in Dolby Atmos, were screened in the immersive sound format.

"All the jobs were brilliant in their own way, but I love that there was so much diversity," said rerecording mixer Greg Orloff, who is nominated for the sound mixing Oscar for Inside Llewyn Davis and previously won for Ray. "Like everyone here, I'm a big fan of sound … and all my fellow nominees."

Outside the screening room, guests enjoyed cocktails, specially prepared chocolate milkshakes and plenty of food. Additionally, guests such as Orloff had their pictures drawn into handheld Etch a Sketch screens by an artist.

Guests included a who's who of Hollywood's sound mixing and editing community, including two-time Oscar winner Andy Nelson, who last weekend received the Cinema Audio Society's Career Achievement Award; two-time Oscar-winning sound editor Ethan Van der Ryn and two-time Oscar-nominated sound editor and designer Erik Aadahl, who are currently working on Godzilla; award-winning supervising sound editor Scott Gershin, whose upcoming projects include The Book of Life; 10-time Oscar-nominated rerecording mixer Anna Behlmer; CAS president and rerecording mixer David E. Fluhr, who last weekend won a CAS Award as part of the mixing team on Frozen; Motion Picture Sound Editors president and rerecording mixer Frank Morrone; Motion Picture Editors Guild board member, supervising sound editor and designer Glenn T. Morgan; and Dolby's Curt Behlmer, who chairs AMPAS' sound branch.

On Thursday, Dolby representatives were also at the Dolby Theatre for testing and prepping in advance of the Oscars. "We're done; it sounds really good," said vp global services and industry relations David Gray, who is overseeing the sound preparations for the ceremony.
