Red Weapon Camera Among HPA Engineering Award Honorees
Colorfront, Dolby, SGO and Red will receive Hollywood Professional Association Engineering Excellence Awards at the 12th annual HPA Awards, Nov. 16 at the Skirball Cultural Center.
Red will be honored for the development of its Weapon digital cinematography camera with its Dragon 8K Vista Vision sensor, which has been used on movies such as Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Colorfront will be recognized for the Colorfront Engine, a color pipeline used on-set through finished product, which is compliant with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Academy Color Encoding System (ACES).
Dolby will receive its trophy for Dolby Vision postproduction tools, which are used with existing color grading systems to create Dolby Vision HDR versions of a production for cinema and home entertainment. Postproduction system development SGO will be honored for Mistika VR, which supports virtual reality postproduction with a toolset that offers real-time stitching capabilities using SGO’s optical flow technology.
Additionally, honorable mentions will be awarded to Canon U.S.A. for its Critical Viewing Reference Displays and Eizo for ColorEdge CG318-4K monitor.
“Entries for the Engineering Awards were at one of the highest levels ever, on a par with last year’s record breaker, and we saw a variety of serious technologies,” said Efilm vp technology Joachim Zell, who chairs the HPA Awards engineering committee.
