'San Andreas' to be First Dolby Cinema Release for Warner Bros.

San Andreas The Rock H 2015

Disaster film San Andreas is the first Warner Bros. movie to be released in Dolby Cinema, which includes Dolby’s new-fangled Dolby Vision high dynamic range format as well as Dolby Atmos immersive sound.

This version can seen in select theaters that are equipped to handle the format. According to AMC websites, that will include Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime locations at AMC BarryWoods 24 in Kansas City, Mo; AMC Deerbrook 24 in Humble, Texas; and AMC North Point Mall 12 in Alpharetta, Ga.

San Andreas also is available with Dolby Atmos sound at theaters equipped with that sound system.

Last weekend, Disney’s Tomorrowland was the first movie to open in Dolby Cinema, and Disney has confirmed that Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out, opening June 19, and 2016 release The Jungle Book also will be released in the format. Additional Dolby Vision movie releases are being planned or considered, including Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the Tron Legacy sequel.

Dolby Vision also is being prepped as a home viewing format, and Warner Bros. has been testing the waters, creating test clips from titles such as Oblivion and The Great Gatsby, which were shown at CES and other trade shows.

Vizio is expected to be the first set maker to offer Dolby Vision-branded TVs.

Dolby Vision offers high dynamic range (meaning a wider range between the whitest whites and blackest blacks) and a wider color gamut.
