Sound Designer Scott Gershin Joins Keywords Studios to Launch Sound Business
Veteran supervising sound editor/designer Scott Gershin — whose credits include Pacific Rim and The Book of Life — and his prior Technicolor Sound Lab team in Burbank have joined Keywords Studios to form a new business that will offer sound services for movies, broadcast, streaming, video games and immersive entertainment.
Technicolor recently made the decision to shut down its interactive sound operations — known as Sound Lab — and motion picture sound units. Now, Gershin and the Sound Lab team make up what will be known as Sound Lab at Keywords, owned by Ireland-headquartered Keywords Studios, which has been growing through acquisitions and maintains sound operations in 20 countries including the U.S., U.K., France, Germany and Japan. For the new Burbank-based entity, Keywords is also investing in new production equipment.
The team includes Gershin, senior producer Debbie Gonzalez, sound supervisor/designer Erick Ocampo, sound supervisor/designer Masanobu "Tomi" Tomita and sound supervisor/designer Jesse Garcia. They are credited on an extensive list of best-selling video games including Final Fantasy XV, Resident Evil and Gears of War.
Gershin — also the Lab's creative director — will additionally continue his work in the film and broadcast industry, having worked on such titles as Nightcrawler, Pacific Rim, American Beauty (for which he was BAFTA-nominated), Hellboy 2 and The Book of Life.
“As games become ever more immersive, sound design quality is getting ever closer to that of movies," said Keywords CEO Andrew Day. "Our new Sound Lab studio, created around Scott and his team, will be integrated within the Keywords Audio services line and will benefit accordingly from our global network of studios and our extensive video game client base around the world.
"Our presence in audio services continues to grow," he continued. "In Los Angeles, with our long-established voiceover studio in Burbank; the recently acquired Blindlight, which focuses on Hollywood voiceover production and writing services; and our specialist music services through recent Keywords joiners, Cord and Laced. The sound design services we are adding with this investment help round out the full suite of audio services we are now able to offer to clients in interactive and linear media.”
Added Gershin: "I am incredibly excited about joining the Keywords family, with their global reach, commitment to quality and ability to service the clients around the world.”
