Allowing Spidey to meet fans in their living rooms, Sony has launched Spider-Verse Web AR Experience, a mobile augmented reality experience based on its animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is set to open Dec. 14 in theaters.

Spider-Verse Web AR Experience is designed to let users see Spider-Man in AR, where they can take pictures and share them with friends. The mobile experience was created by mixed reality developers 8th Wall and Trigger, and uses 8th Wall Web and Amazon Sumerian technology running on Amazon Web Services.

It is the latest example of a studio using mixed reality to extend its IP. “Spider-Man is a perfect match for AR not only because his acrobatic moves and iconic poses lend themselves well to the format, but because he’s one of the most relatable superheroes,” Rose Phillips, senior vp digital marketing at Sony Pictures Entertainment, said in a statement.

“We believe Web AR is the final barrier for mass adoption of AR," added Jason Yim, CEO and executive creative director for Trigger.
