Bruce Springsteen Announces Autobiography 'Born to Run'
As one of America's most prolific songwriters, Bruce Springsteen has always been content to let the music do the talking — until now.
The Boss will release an autobiography — titled Born to Run — on Sept. 27, according to a press release.
Springsteen began writing his memoirs, with stories told in “disarming candor,” after the 2009 Super Bowl.
“Writing about yourself is a funny business," the rocker said. "But in a project like this, the writer has made one promise, to show the reader his mind. In these pages, I've tried to do this."
In the book, the 66-year-old musician describes growing up in Freehold, N.J., amid "poetry, danger, and darkness,” and will take the reader on a journey through his ascension from a bar-band musician in Asbury Park to the formation and “rise of the E Street Band.” Additionally, Springsteen will chronicle the struggles that inspired his best work, and provide more insight into the song “Born to Run,” which he had previously referenced as his “shot at the title.”
"This is the book we've been hoping for," said Jonathan Karp, publisher of Simon & Schuster. "Readers will see their own lives in Bruce Springsteen's extraordinary story, just as we recognize ourselves in his songs."
Simon & Schuster acquired Born to Run in an exclusive submission from Springsteen's legal representatives, Allen Grubman and Jonathan Ehrlich of the law firm Grubman Shire & Meiselas, P.C, according to the release.
This isn’t the singer-songwriter’s first outing as an author. Simon & Schuster previously published his illustrated book with Frank Caruso, Outlaw Pete, in 2014.
Springsteen was reportedly paid a big advance for the book to the tune of $10 million, according to the New York Post.
The work will be published in hardcover, ebook and audio editions by Simon & Schuster in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia and India, and rights have already been sold to publishers in nine countries.
