The Pumpkin War, a middle grade novel by Humanitas executive director Cathleen Young, has been acquired by Random House imprint Wendy Lamb Books in a six-figure two book deal. Publication is scheduled for 2018.

Set on Wisconsin’s Madeline Island, The Pumpkin War follows 12-year-old tomboy Billie O’Brien, as she tends bees, bottles honey and shears llamas all while growing a giant 2,000 pound pumpkin so she can win the annual pumpkin race and reclaim the prize her best friend Sam snatched from her last summer. But things don’t quite work out the way she imagined they would.

Young was a writer on MacGyver and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. She won the Humanitas Prize and a Christopher Award in 1995 for her script for the ABC Hallmark Hall of Fame Presentation A Place for Annie.

Young is represented by CAA, which will also handle foreign and film rights.
