THR‘s Stephen Galloway and Matthew Belloni sat down for a candid conversation with Gravity‘s Alfonso Cuaron, The Butler‘s Lee Daniels, Captain Phillips‘ Paul Greengrass, 12 Years a Slave‘s Steve McQueen, American Hustle‘s David O. Russell and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty‘s Ben Stiller that included discussions about fighting with studios, firing actors, quitting film school, explaining long days on set to their kids, getting notes from executives and what made them go behind the camera for the first time.
Greengrass opened up about the hardest thing about being a director.
“When I got into my 40s, I had a real crisis, ’cause I felt I’d lost touch with what had got me shooting in the first place,” the director, now 58, revealed. “I’d spent 10 years making films and getting further and further away from my point of view.”
Russell, meanwhile, weighed in on the toll that the filmmaking process takes on directors’ personal lives: “I do think it is an all-consuming thing, like major-league sports, and it’s not for everybody. And your family has to be down for that.”
