NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” took the top two spots in the weekly ratings battle, but Fox won the war in the adults 18-49 demographic with four nightly wins, while CBS earned top billing in viewers.
The Tuesday and 9 p.m. Wednesday editions of “America’s Got Talent” were the top two programs in adults 18-49 (and viewers) for the week ended Sunday, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday. The 60-minute results show at 9 p.m. Wednesday averaged 12.4 million viewers and a 3.5 rating/10 share in adults 18-49, while Tuesday’s two-hour competition averaged 11.7 million viewers and a 3.4/10. ABC’s Tuesday “Wipeout” (9.5 million, 3.1/11) came in third in what would be the first of two episodes last week. Thursday’s “Wipeout” (7.9 million, 2.6/10) was in the top 10 as well but fell in both measures. Wednesday’s repeat of the Tuesday “America’s Got Talent” at 8 p.m. was lower-ranked.
Fox gathered steam for the week with double helpings of cooking competition “Hell’s Kitchen” on Tuesday: 5.9 million, 2.8/9 at 8 p.m. and slightly better, 6.4 million, 3.0/9 at 9 p.m. “Hell’s Kitchen” won in adults 18-49, adults 18-34 as well as men and women’s demos. It was up 4% from the previous week. “So You Think You Can Dance” also came charging out to help Fox in the ratings, with the week’s broadcast top 10 including the Wednesday (6.4 million, 2.5/8) and Thursday (6.4 million, 2.4/8) programs.
Also in the top 10 shows for the week in adults 18-49 was ABC’s “The Bachelorette” (8.3 million, 2.7/9) and a repeat “Big Bang Theory” on CBS (8.3 million, 2.5/7). “The Bachelorette” hit a summer-season high and its best performance from the summer since July 27, 2009. It was the third week in a row that “The Bachelorette” had beaten its Monday competition.
New fare from ABC didn’t fare as well. Cop drama “Rookie Blue” (7.2 million, 1.9/6) and “Boston Med” (5.1 million, 1.3/4) failed to gain much traction in their summer debuts on Thursday. Two scripted shows on ABC — “Scoundrels” and sci-fi “The Gates”– underscored how hard it is to launch scripted in the summer. And CBS’s Daytime Emmys telecast on Sunday was way up from last year’s ceremony that aired on the CW but down slightly in adults 18-49 when it was on ABC and up slightly in viewership.
CBS tied another record low in adults 18-49 (1.3/4) that it reached last week as well as the week of June 22, 2009, and Aug. 11, 2008.
For the week ended Sunday, Fox (4.5 million, 1.7/6) was the top network in adults 18-49 ahead of ABC (5.1 million, 1.5/5) and NBC (5.2 million, 1.5/5) and CBS (6.2 million, 1.3/4).
