‘Bad Lieutenant’ and bad blood in Venice
Bad Lieutenant — Film Review
HONG KONG — “Bad Lieutenant,” Werner Herzog’s remake of Abel Ferrara’s cop thriller, will open next week’s Bangkok International Film Festival.
As befits a program that organizers promise will be a mix of ‘old Hollywood’ and contemporary Asia, the closing night picture is Thai omnibus movie “Sawasdee Bangkok.” The picture has ten directors including art-house and commercial film-makers Prachya Pinkaew, Pen-ek Ratanaruang, Wisit Sasanatieng, Aditya Assarat and Kongdej Jaturanrasmee.
The festival’s competition section has nine films including Korean drama about domestic violence “Breathless” which premiered in Rotterdam in January, Maren Ade’s romantic drama “Alle Anderen” (Everyone Else), which bowed in Berlin in February, and Xavier Dolan’s biography “I Killed My Mother” from Cannes.
The festival will also put on a seminar program with topics including “Films in Crisis?,” “Protecting Your Film in the Digital Era,” “What Can Thailand Offer?” “How to Make Films That Sell!” and “Thailywood — Evolving and Involving Thailand.”
The festival is set to run Sept. 24-30.
