LONDON – Theater productions from the British capital’s West End will be rolled out into movie houses around the world after U.K.-based production banner Digital Theater inked a deal with CinemaLive, the British and Australian based distribution events programming company.
The two companies plan to partner to distribute a series of shows from September 2013 captured in high definition live from London’s stages.
Recent Digital Theater releases include the Almeida Theater’s production of King Lear starring Jonathan Pryce, Long Day’s Journey into Night starring David Suchet and Laurie Metcalf and Much Ado About Nothing starring David Tennant and Catherine Tate.
Launched in late 2009 by Robert Delamere and Tom Shaw, Digital Theater works in partnership with Britain’s leading theater companies to capture live performance onscreen in hi-definition from multiple camera angles.
The initial series of theatrical releases will combine upcoming titles from Digital Theater as well as the very best of the existing catalog, the parties said.
The partnership has not yet revealed future titles.
CinemaLive director and CEO Peter Skillman described West End theater productions as “attractive” to exhibitors “looking to bring their audiences must-see event cinema.”
Delamere said: “It’s fantastic to be partnering with an organization with the reputation and expertise of CinemaLive to bring the best of British theater to cinemas around the world.”
CinemaLive delivers music, cultural and family entertainment via satellite and hard drive to over 70 countries around the world.
