Mega producer Brett Ratner and Imax CEO Rich Gelfond will be among the industry heavyweights at the inaugural Immersive Summit in Cannes.
The event, hosted by Winston Baker in cooperation with The Hollywood Reporter, will be held on Friday, May 19, during the Cannes Film Festival.
Ratner, whose credits as a director include the Rush Hour franchise and the upcoming The Libertine, starring Johnny Depp, and as a producer, Oscar winner The Revenant, will hold a keynote conversation with industry veteran P. John Burke. Ratner is expected to address innovations in film financing — he has been a pioneer in financing with China — as well as reflect on his remarkable career in Hollywood.
On the tech side, Gelfond will hold a keynote on virtual reality (VR) technology, something Imax has been at the forefront of, and how it will affect the future of the movie business.
The Immersive Summit will take place within the auspices of the Cannes festival’s NEXT program, which focuses on innovation in the art and business of film. The summit will focus on the intersection of technology and the film business, exploring how best to monetize innovation, both creative and technological, and how to break into the booming field of VR.
“Within the frame of our program NEXT, we’ve started two years ago to explore immersive cinema and VR, both in terms of production and distribution. We’re excited to join our forces with Winston Baker to launch this Immersive Summit, which will complement perfectly the workshops and experiences offered by NEXT to Marche participants,” said Jerome Paillard, executive director of the Cannes film market.
Winston Baker’s partners and sponsors include Akin Gump, EP Financial Solutions, Latham & Watkins, Vine Alternative Investments, Loeb & Loeb, Manatt, New Zealand Film Commission, Resn, The Hollywood Reporter, and FilmFestivals.com. Program and registration details are on the conference website.
