Discovery, led by CEO David Zaslav, and Comcast said on Thursday that streaming service Discovery+ has launched on the cable giant’s Xfinity Flex broadband-only service.
It will also begin its rollout on Comcast’s X1 pay TV platform “in the coming weeks,” giving subscribers “access to more great Discovery programming over the internet alongside all the live and on-demand content they get as part of their TV subscription.” Financial details weren’t disclosed.
The first deal for the Discovery streamer, which launched early this year, with a pay TV partner will also be seen as a positive by anyone who may have feared distributors may prefer to focus on carriage arrangements for Discovery’s linear networks or see the streaming offer of competing with those.
Also launching on Flex on Thursday, and soon on X1, are Discovery’s direct-to-consumer apps Food Network Kitchen and MotorTrend.
“As the definitive streaming destination for real-life storytelling, Discovery+ serves fans with an unparalleled entertainment experience and a truly differentiated offering,” said Gabriel Sauerhoff, senior vp, digital distribution and commercial partnerships at Discovery. “We are thrilled to expand our relationship with our valued partner Comcast to provide their customers with direct and easy access to discovery+ and other applications across their industry-leading entertainment platforms – Xfinity Flex, and soon X1.”
Rebecca Heap, senior vp, video and entertainment at Comcast Cable, said the launch of Discovery+ “gives our customers access to more of the best entertainment from one of the newest streaming services on the market.” She added: “Whether a super fan or new to their content, X1 and Flex make it easy for customers to enjoy all the great programming Discovery+ has available.”
Discovery+ offers more than 55,000 episodes of current and classic shows from Discovery’s portfolio of networks, including HGTV, Food Network, TLC, ID, OWN, Travel Channel, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and the upcoming Magnolia Network, as well as more than 50 original titles and hundreds of hours of exclusive content. It is available in the U.S. starting at $4.99 per month, with an advertising-free version priced at $6.99 a month.
