LONDON — A&M/Universal’s Duffy continues her reign on Billboard’s pan-European sales charts, as “Rockferry” starts a third consecutive and sixth aggregate week atop European Top 100 Albums and “Mercy” leads Eurochart Hot 100 Singles for a second consecutive week, and third overall.
The Welsh singer adds a third triumph on the European Radio Airplay chart, tabulated by Nielsen Music Control, on which “Mercy” climbs from the second to first spot.
“Rockferry” climbs from No. 2 to No. 1 in Sweden, 9-5 in Austria, 7-5 in Switzerland and 10-7 in Germany. That follows live shows in Cologne and Berlin last week. Duffy’s next European date is Wednesday at the Accelerator Festival in Stockholm.
Madonna’s “Hard Candy” (Warner Bros.) is at No. 2 for a third week on Top 100 Albums, which it had earlier led for four weeks. It’s up from No. 7 to No. 5 in France, but tumbles from the first to fifth spot in Greece. The former Eurochart No. 1 “4 Minutes” featuring Justin Timberlake is at No. 2 behind “Mercy” for a second week.
Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” (Universal Island) moves up from No. 4 to No. 3 in its 79th week on Top 100 Albums, spending a second week at No. 1 in Portugal. The multi-platinum set is also up from No. 5 to No. 4 in both Germany and Austria and holds at No. 2 in Greece and No. 3 in Holland.
Coldplay’s much-vaunted “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends” (Parlophone/EMI) makes its pan-European debut at No. 4, despite only making the chart deadline in certain territories because of its unusual midweek release last Thursday. The new set easily takes the U.K. No. 1 spot on only three days’ sales, having sold 302,000 from release up to last Saturday night. It’s also new at No. 1 in Norway and No. 2 in Denmark, but many more debuts will follow in the charts that make up next week’s Top 100 Albums survey. The album’s predecessor “X&Y” led Top 100 Albums for 13 straight weeks from June to September 2005.
Coldplay’s former Parlophone labelmate Radiohead holds at No. 5 with “The Best Of,” spending a second week at No. 1 in Ireland and climbing from No. 6 to No. 3 in Portugal and from No. 9 to No. 7 in Italy. The compilation is down from fourth to sixth place in the U.K.
Neil Diamond’s “Home Before Dark” (Columbia/Sony BMG) moves back from No. 9 to No. 6 overall, after its best sales week to date in the United Kingdom. According to the Official U.K. Charts Co., total sales there of 234,000 began with a first-week tally of 47,400, followed by 43,659, then 36,370 and 45,088. In the week’s lead up to Father’s Day last Sunday, the set shifted 61,803 copies.
Alanis Morissette’s “Flavors of Entanglement” (Warner Bros.) suffers a second-week fall of No. 3 to No. 7 on Top 100 Albums. It loses the No. 1 crown in Switzerland to Amy Macdonald’s “This Is The Life” (Vertigo/Universal), which holds at No. 12 as it completes six months on the aggregate chart.
German duo Ich + Ich’s “Vom Selben Stern” (Polydor/Universal), which dipped from No. 8 to No. 13 on Top 100 Albums last week, makes that move in reverse after climbing back from No. 4 to No. 1 in Germany and the fourth to second spot in Austria. The single “So Soll Es Bleiben” is top five in both markets. Their countryman Mark Medlock is up 10-9 overall with “Cloud Dancer” (Sony BMG), which holds at No. 2 behind Ich + Ich in Germany as its single “Summer Love” falls 2-6. Finally on the pan-European top ten, Usher’s “Here I Stand” (LaFace/Sony BMG) is down 7-10.
The fastest riser on the Eurochart sees the return to the top ten of a big achiever from the early part of the decade, who also had a hot run in the 1990s. Jamaican pop-rap-reggae star Shaggy climbs from No. 30 to No. 6 with “Feel The Rush” (Ministry of Sound), featuring Trix & Flix. It’s the official song of the UEFA Euro 2008 soccer tournament, currently taking place in Austria & Switzerland this month. Trix & Flix are the event’s cartoon mascots.
