SHANGHAI — ESPN STAR Sports on Monday named Wong Swee Teng its new China GM, two weeks before the opening of the Beijing Olympics.
Wong, a former music and book publishing executive at Bertelsmann China, will report to ESS managing director Manu Sawhney. He replaces Lao Gu.
Despite the proximity to the Games, ESS said that the move is not related. “Swee’s appointment is not on a project basis and thus is not linked to any Olympic-related project alone,” an ESS spokesman said.
ESS recently secured exclusive, nonstandard television rights for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games and London 2012 Summer Games for South and Southeast Asia, marking the first time the International Olympic Committee awarded rights to a pay TV platform for these regions.
