DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Gloria Estefan will open a three-day musical program Dec. 13 at the Dubai International Film Festival.
The festival has introduced Rhythm and Reels — a new section within the festival that seeks to bring unusual and cutting-edge films together with live musical performances — at the open-air Dubai Media City amphitheater to celebrate the mutually enriching relationship between film and music.
Estefan will headline a concert following the world-premiere screening of “90 Miles,” directed by her husband, record producer Emilio Estefan. She said, “It is an honor for Emilio and I to have the world premiere of the ’90 Miles’ documentary in Dubai. As an artist and performer, I’m thrilled to have been invited to perform it at the Dubai Film Festival.”
Added Shivani Pandya, managing director of the festival: “This promises to be one of the highlights of the Dubai concert season and a fitting way to kick off the first year of DIFF’s Rhythm & Reels program. Music and film go hand in hand, and each can move audiences equally, needing no translation.”
During the three-day event, “The White Thread” — a Moroccan film exploring traditional village music and modern dance beats — will be screened. The closing film will be “Across the Universe,” directed by Julie Taymor, a critically acclaimed love story based on the Beatles’ songbook.
DIFF runs from Dec. 9-16.
