FOCUS, CJ TEAM FOR ‘THIRST’
Universal’s Focus Features and South Korea’s CJ Entertainment have teamed to produce Korean director Park Chan-wook’s “Thirst,” a horror film about a failed medical experiment that turns a priest into a vampire. The film, in production, will be released by Focus in North America, with CJ Entertainment handling the rest of the world.
‘ELDORADO’ EYES OSCAR
Bouli Lanners’ melancholy road movie “Eldorado” will carry the flag for Belgium in the foreign-language Oscar race. “Eldorado” is the winner of Label Europa Cinemas and the FIPRESCI international critics’ prize at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. Lanners directed and stars in the movie. Oscar nominees will be announced Jan. 22.
Dolby Laboratories has reduced the price of its reusable 3-D glasses for digital cinema from $39 to $27.50. Because the glasses are reusable, Dolby suggested that the per-ticket cost of using them will be well below the cost of disposable options.
In what is believed to be an industry first, Paramount Home Entertainment is bundling its upcoming home video release of “Kung Fu Panda” with a direct-to-video companion film and will release the package on a Sunday, Nov. 9, instead of the traditional Tuesday. DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda” grossed $213.8 million in North America this summer.
