Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 is now the biggest-grossing franchise title overseas thanks to a $47.1 million weekend at 10,261 locations in 73 territories, boosting its foreign gross total to $446.8 million.
The fifth and final title based on Stephenie Meyer’s series of novels about a young woman (Kristen Stewart) in love with a vampire (Robert Pattinson) has accumulated $15.9 million more than the franchise’s previous all-time offshore box-office champ, last year’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1, which collected $430.9 million.
Breaking Dawn Part 2 dominated a generally lackluster box-office session overseas — taking the No. 1 spot for the third consecutive stanza — with holdover titles for the most part registering diminishing returns. Biggest markets for the franchise film are the U.K. (with a $49.9 million market cume) and Brazil ($42.6 million).
Worldwide gross total stands at $701.4 million. Lionsgate International, which is handling foreign distribution of the Summit Ent. co-production, said earlier that Breaking Dawn Part 2’s mighty action helped lift the distributor’s 2012 total foreign box office past the $1 billion mark.
Premiering in 46 territories in what distributor Paramount pointedly noted was “a nonholiday weekend,” DreamWorks Animation’s Rise of the Guardians drew a mild-mannered $38.8 million overall playing at 9,924 locations in 55 markets. It finished No. 2 on the weekend.
The film’s overseas gross total since its Nov. 16 foreign opening is $55.5 million.
The $145 million fantasy title featuring the voices of Alec Baldwin and Hugh Jackman recorded No. 1 bows in some 20 markets, as per Paramount, the biggest of which was France ($4.8 million at 608 sites) and Mexico ($3.2 million from 1,327 spots).
Brazil contributed $2.4 million at 549 locales, Italy generated $2.9 million at 601 situations and the U.K. registered $3.2 million at 488 sites, sufficient for a No. 3 market ranking. Rise of the Guardians’ “run is expected to continue well into the holiday season and school holidays,” said Paramount. Openings in Israel, Iceland and South Africa are on tap this week.
Finishing No. 3 was Sony/MGM’s Skyfall, the 23rd installment of the James Bond franchise, which collected $33.9 million from 7,576 spots in 88 markets handled by Sony and licensees of co-distributor MGM. The third outing starring Daniel Craig as 007 has collected a total foreign gross of $620.8 million, of which Sony-handled territories have accounted for $539.3 million.
Since its overseas opening on Oct. 26, Skyfall has accumulated nearly $200 million more that the $432.2 million total foreign gross of the previous franchise record holder, 2006’s Casino Royale, also starring Craig. (Skyfall’s worldwide gross stands at $866.3 million.)
A No. 1 Japan opening provided $5.7 million from 580 situations, which Sony said was more than 50 percent bigger than the opening market gross of 2008’s Quantum of Solace, which grossed a total of $407.7 overseas. Skyfall remained No. 1 in its sixth U.K. stanza, grossing $3.7 million at 532 locations and lifting its huge market cume to $151 million.
Making No. 1 debuts in Spain, Singapore and Malaysia was Twentieth Century Fox’s release of Life of Pi, the film version of Yann Martel’s novel about a young castaway and a Bengal tiger.
Directed by Taiwanese-born Ang Lee, the Fox 2000 co-production drew $24.6 million on the weekend overall playing a total of 5,767 in 12 markets, the best of of which were China ($13.8 million in second round at 3,800 site for a market cume of $40 million)) and Taiwan ($2.7 million at 165 locations, a rousing 47 percent increase from the opening weekend).
Despite its relatively limited foreign release, Life of Pi has generated a total of $64.1 million foreign in just two rounds.
Argo, actor-director Ben Affleck’s international thriller from Warner Bros., grossed $4.1 million on the weekend at more than 2,100 screens in 49 territories, representing a relatively benign 36 percent drop from the prior weekend. Offshore cume stands at $56 million. Best markets are Australia (cume $10.1 million) and France (cume $7.6 million).
Opening No. 1 in South Korea was director Jo Geun-Hyeon’s local language action drama, 26 Years, about the search for the mastermind behind the infamous 1980 massacre in Gwangju. Opening stanza at some 600 sites drew $3.7 million.
Sony Animation’s Hotel Transylvania, a comedy voiced by Adam Sandler and Kevin James about a boy who discovers Dracula is real, grossed $3.5 million at 3,065 sites in 57 markets. The title’s foreign gross total stands at $152.8 accumulated since Sept. 27. A No. 2 Venezuela opening generated $675,000 at 105 sites.
Flying under the radar was Warners’ release of Trouble With The Curve, the baseball drama starring Clint Eastwood and Amy Adams, which collected $2.77 million in its second round overseas at 1,850 screens in 20 markets. Foreign cume stands at $7.7 million.
Opening No. 3 in France was Populaire, director Regis Roinsard’s 1950s period comedy, which opened out of competition at November’s Rome Film Festival. The Mars distribution release, about the romantic entanglement of a fast-typing secretary, drew $2.7 million from 450 screens. The Weinstein Co. has acquired U.S. distribution rights.
Finishing No. 5 in its second U.K. round was The Weinstein Co.’s Silver Linings Playbook, director David O. Russell’s comedy/drama costarring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Weekend delivered $1.2 million at 397 situations for a market cume of $4.4 million.
Other international cumes: Disney’sWreck-It Ralph, $44 million; Sony’s 2012 (Reissue), $18.9 million; Universal’s Pitch Perfect, $4.86 million; UGC Distribution’s Therese Desqueyroux, $2.6 million in two rounds in France only; DreamWorks Animation/Paramount’s Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, $525.3 million; Universal’s The Man With the Iron Fists, $1.6 million; FilmNation’s Looper, $99.2 million; and Stone Angels’ Comme Des Freres, $2.1 million in two rounds in France only.
Also, Sony’s Here Comes The Boom, $11.3 million; Universal’s Ted, $283.1 million; Cloud Atlas, $3 million in six markets handled by Focus Features; Universal’s The Bourne Legacy, $162.9 million; Focus Features’ To Rome With Love, $56.6 million; Universal’s Anna Karenina, $11.6 million; Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 4, $85.7 million; Universal’s Un Plan Parfait, $9.3 million over five frames in France only; and Universal’s ParaNorman, $43.2 million.
