A return to warm and sunny summer weather drove German audiences out of the cinemas and sent box-office returns falling this past weekend.
Tom Cruise‘s Mission: Impossible – Rouge Nation held onto the top spot in its third weekend, but the gross, at $1.37 million, was tepid at best.
Cinema owners and distributors across the country will be hoping they have seen the last of the beer garden weather and that falling temperatures will translate to rising attendance.
Universal’s Minions is one title that has successfully defied the sun to become the hit of the summer. The animated comedy added another $1 million to its take in Germany this past weekend, crossing a $60 million gross for the territory. Already the highest-grossing release this year, Minions passed Pixar’s Ratatouille to become the seventh-most-successful animated film of all time here.
There was a sharp drop-off after Mission: Impossible and Minions. Jake Gyllenhaal boxing film Southpaw grossed $767,000 in its opening frame, just ahead of Amy Schumer‘s rom-com Trainwreck, with $635,000 in its sophomore weekend. Sony Picture’s Pixels, starring Adam Sandler and Kevin James, earned a respectable $572,000 in its fourth outing, good enough for fifth.
Overall, box office gross for the weekend was just $8 million, a nearly 40-percent drop on the comparable period last year.
