The Universal action film, released under the title Fast & Furious 7 in Germany, raced to a $13 million (€12 million) opening, the best performance in the territory so far this year, as well as the best opening for the franchise.
But local laffer, The Nanny, a German comedy from hit-meister Matthias Schweighofer, finished in a respectable second place, earning $2.86 million (€2.6 million) in its sophomore frame. As did Shaun the Sheep, StudioCanal’s claymation effort based on the British children’s TV series from Aardvark Animations, which earned a further $1.4 million (€1.3 million) over its third weekend. Shaun The Sheep is the second family-friendly title from StudioCanal to score with European audiences after the blockbuster success of Paddington.
Another British entry, Fox’s The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, earned a decent $604,000 (€550,000) in its first weekend in Germany, good enough for a seventh place in a crowded arena. John Madden‘s sequel to his 2011 hit about British retirees traveling to India, has grossed some $21 million in the U.K..
