German indie distributor Splendid Medien returned to profit in the first half of 2015, rebounding from a $2 million loss over the same period in 2014 to a $1.92 million (€1.7 million) profit. Revenues were also stronger, up an impressive 13 percent to $32 million (€28.4 million).
The Cologne-based company, which distributes across Germany, Austria and the Benelux countries, appears to have successfully shifted its focus away from its traditional male demographic to the more lucrative market for female film fans.
Splendid’s most successful release this year has been Julianne Moore Alzheimer drama Still Alice, which earned close to $4 million in Germany and Austria.
Splendid hasn’t completely abandoned macho action films, however. Two of its strongest home entertainment titles so far this year have been The Expendables 3 and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.
