TNT’s new drama series “Saving Grace” had a strong second week, while the return of TBS’ comedy “My Boys” showed growth among young adults, and the second season of HGTV’s “Design Star” improved in Week 2.
Meanwhile, the second episode of AMC’s “Mad Men” was off significantly from its premiere.
“Saving Grace” averaged 5.4 million total viewers at 10 p.m. Monday, according to Nielsen Media Research. That was a solid second-week showing for the drama, which stars Holly Hunter as an Oklahoma City police detective who gets helps from an unconventional angel (Leon Rippy), though it does mark a dropoff from last week’s premiere (6.4 million).
“Grace” lead-in “The Closer” averaged 7.7 million total viewers.
In the key adult demos, “Closer” averaged 2.1 million in 18-49 and 2.8 million in 25-54, while “Grace” averaged 1.7 million in the former and 2.3 million in the latter.
Meanwhile, TBS’ “My Boys” returned with back-to-back episodes from 10-11 p.m. Monday, averaging 1.6 million total viewers, off only slightly from November’s back-to-back series premiere (1.7 million). Separately, the 10 p.m. episode averaged 1.59 million, while the 10:30 p.m. installment drew 1.62 million.
The show, starring Jordana Spiro as a twentysomething sports writer who spends a lot of time with her male friends, did show some growth in adults 18-34 compared with the series premiere. Monday’s 10 p.m. episode averaged 783,000 viewers in the demo (up 4%), while the 10:30 p.m. installment averaged 818,000 (up 8%). The median age for Monday night’s episodes was 29.
The 10 p.m. episode also built on its lead-in, “Friends,” which averaged 706,000 in the demo, though it was off in total viewers (1.69 million vs. 1.59 million).
Elsewhere in cable ratings news, the first “challenge” episode of HGTV’s reality competition series “Design Star 2” averaged 1.8 million total viewers at 9 p.m. Sunday.
