Composer Hans Zimmer on Thursday shared some insight for those who want to join his new studio, Remote Control.
“You better have a point of view so we can come up with an idea together,” he said.
Zimmer spoke during a Q&A on Day 1 of The Hollywood Reporter/Billboard Film & TV Music Conference at the Sofitel hotel. The session was moderated by THR senior international features editor Kevin Cassidy after Zimmer was presented with the Maestro Award by THR editor Elizabeth Guider.
The prolific composer earned the first of his six Oscar nominations for “Rain Man” (1988) and won best original score for “The Lion King” (1994). His many other credits include “Gladiator,” “As Good as It Gets” and “Thelma & Louise.” Zimmer took a moment to address his recent quibble with the Academy and why his score for “The Dark Knight” was is not being considered for the Oscar race.
“They have their rules, and I have mine,” he said. “I like to put my team on my cue sheet because I want them to be part of the future of this industry. The Academy rules state that the cue sheet must only list the composer, but that’s not the way I think. The good thing is this has started a dialogue within the Academy. I don’t like the idea that people don’t get credit and work in the dark.”
Zimmer recently wrapped work on Ron Howard’s “Frost/Nixon,” which hits theaters Dec. 5.
